Are You Aging Well? A New Way to Know—And Grow Stronger
Have you ever seen one of those commercials for a portable heart monitor, where the actor asks, “How’s your heart?” And then comes the follow-up: “How do you know?”
At Powhatan Physical Therapy, we ask a different—but equally important—question: Are you aging well? And more importantly, how do you know?
It’s easy to assume we’re doing just fine as we get older. Maybe you’re still gardening, still walking the dog, still playing with the grandkids. But the truth is, functional decline can creep in quietly. One missed step. One awkward twist. One unexpected fall. That’s all it takes to turn a manageable limitation into a serious setback.
That’s why we offer the Fit After Fifty Assessment—a proactive, evidence-based way to measure how well your body is aging, and what you can do to stay strong, independent, and confident in the years ahead.
What Is the Fit After Fifty Assessment?
This one-time adult functional independent test includes a brief medical history, documentation of your vital signs, and a hands-on evaluation by one of our licensed physical therapists. We measure key indicators such as posture, flexibility, balance (both static and dynamic), endurance, and strength. Then, we compare your scores to age-based norms to give you a clear picture of where you stand—and where you might need support.
These results matter. Research shows that poor scores in these areas correlate with an increased risk of falls and injury. We want to help you catch those red flags early, when small changes in routine or targeted exercises can make a huge difference.
What Happens After the Assessment?
You won’t just get a test score. You’ll get clarity—and a plan.
Depending on your results, your therapist will recommend one of three paths:
You’re doing great! Keep up the good work, and let’s check in with each other later.
You would benefit from a few key exercises. We’ll teach you what to do and how to do it.
You could use formal physical therapy. We’ll guide you through the next steps and, if needed, coordinate care with your physician. (Note: You don’t need a physician’s referral to begin therapy with us.)
If therapy is recommended, we’ll work with your insurance carrier directly. The assessment is a $125 and one-hour investment in your future—and we think it’s worth it.
Who Should Consider Fit After Fifty?
This isn’t just for people already dealing with pain or injury. In fact, some of our favorite stories come from folks who were feeling fine—until they realized they could be feeling fantastic.
You (or a loved one) may benefit from Fit After Fifty if:
You’re 50+ and want to age proactively
You’re recovering from surgery and want a post-therapy check-up
You’ve noticed mobility limitations
You have concerns about balance or fall risk
You’re starting a new fitness routine and want to do it safely
You’re looking for a thoughtful gift for a parent or aging friend (yes, gift cards are available!)
Why We Do This Work
At Powhatan Physical Therapy, we believe aging should be about thriving, not just surviving. We’ve seen firsthand how small changes can lead to big improvements—and how empowering it is when someone understands their body and feels supported in taking charge of their health.
We’re here to help you stay active, mobile, and independent for as long as possible. Because aging well doesn’t happen by accident. It happens by design—and with the right team by your side.
