Understanding Pain
Pain is a normal, protective response to noxious stimulation. If tissue is damaged, it usually heals within 3-6 months. However, many people experience pain for much longer, and this is called chronic pain. In this scenario, your nervous system performs like an alarm system that will not turn off.
Changes occur within the brain and nerves to create a hypersensitive state, even though the original injured tissues are likely healed. Along with pain neuroscience education, physical therapists employ a graded exposure approach to rehab to:
reboot your nervous system over time
reduce the pain experience and fear avoidance
maximize your return to the activities you love
